Ramadan. And other tales.

Ramadan, for Muslims, is the 9th month on the Islamic calendar and a very holy month. It’s a month of reflection, and one of practicing a lot of self-restraint. It lasts for 29 or 30 days; and we are expected to fast from sunrise to sunset on each of those days. But it goes beyond ‘starving’ yourself. It’s a month of spiritual cleansing and rejuvenation. It’s 30 days of repairing your relationship with God. It’s 30 days of performing your duties as a Muslim, and going above and beyond [ more prayer, charity, and acts of kindness]. It’s basically like a reset; from sinning back to holiness, with the hopes of retaining your new level of spirituality beyond the month of Ramadan. Continue Reading

Self-care May.

Self-care May. So. I started the year with a theme. I also made everyone in my family pick a theme. Mine was “blossom”.  The dictionary definition of blossom is ‘to mature or develop in a promising or healthy way’, and the idea behind it was that I would blossom in all areas of my life; particularly work & personal life. I have now gone further since the second quarter started to pick a theme for each month [in addition to blossoming all round, lol]. The theme for April was “Go all out”, and this was specifically for my business [my kids’ clothing line House 38]. And I think I did go all out. I pushed myself harder, and put my all into pushing the business out there.

Afropolitan Vibes – March ’16

Random shot right outside of Freedom Park

I went to the last Afropolitan Vibes at Freedom Park in Lagos. It’s a monthly live music series that holds at Freedom Park, in the heart of Lagos [Nigeria]. The March edition featured soul singer, Nneka, and a major throwback from my childhood, Blackky. As usual, Bantu was also there. Dammy Krane was there as well, but we missed his performance.

Freedom park by the way used to be a prison and was reconstructed into a park, with some of the history preserved. I’ll share more about Freedom Park in a future post

Throwback Thursday. 002 [NSFW]

Throwback Thursday is great! It helps me relive certain exciting moments in my travel. Today’s TBT is from the sexmuseum, Amsterdam. Please proceed with caution, lol.

Lanre and I actually found this museum more funny than sexual. Trust us to turn everything into fun & jokes, lol!

Denrele Takes Venice [ITALY]

My friend, Denrele, visited Venice and was kind enough to send in pictures and answer questions about the amazing Italian city.

I’m so jealous right now. What took you to Venice?

Denrele: I run an art gallery, so this trip for me was mostly about visiting the Venice Art Biennale and soaking up all the art that the pavilions had to offer. The Art Biennale happens every 2 years and this one was all the more special because it had a Nigerian as curator. Continue Reading

Throw Back Thursday. 001

I can’t believe it’s Thursday already, this week is FLYING! Today I’m throwing it back to my brief visit to Istanbul with my friend, Es. The picture above reminds me of how the people there reacted when they saw two black girls. It was like they hadn’t seen anything like us. The girls in the picture above actually walked up to us giggling; and asked if they could take a picture. We heard comments like “Beyonce & Rihanna”, and had people whistling at us. It was a fun day of wandering around the city!

Happy New Year

IMG_5415I can’t count the number of times I’ve deleted and restored this blog. I actually gave up on blogging for one obvious reason. I haven’t been traveling. And I thought, what’s the point of being a travel blogger if I’m not traveling?

I decided to give up my 9 – 5 and start my own business, which I’ve now been doing for about 4 – 5 months. It’s actually a business I was doing some years ago, quit, and then came back to. And now I’m coming back to blogging after quitting too. What does that tell me? I’ll always find my way back to the things I love doing, no matter how long it takes. So, I’m now a full-time children’s clothing designer [at House 38]. I was actually doing womenswear before; and then I fell into children’s clothing and fell in love with it. So, I decided to stick to it. I’m still unsure as to whether or not I’ll still do womenswear.

And I’m back to blogging. I may not be traveling as much. In fact, I may not be traveling at all for some time. When you start a business, you put your life savings into it, lol. And the beginning is the hardest part. Also, even though I have people working with me, it’s still a one-man business. For now, if I’m not there, business probably cannot run smoothly. So I have to stay put, for sometime. But I’m happy for the growth in the past few months and can’t wait to see it grow and bloom. Maybe then I can handover to someone else once in a while and travel. But I’ve decided to not kill my passion, just because I’m not traveling. Because even though I’m not traveling, I’m constantly exploring travel. I’m constantly looking up places online, reading about people, building fantasy itineraries, and stalking all things travel online. And I can blog about that. I can still inspire others to travel, and most of all inspire myself as well to get back to it as soon as possible. There will also be guest posts from my friends that are traveling. Oh, and there’ll be posts of me being a tourist in my own city, LAGOS!

So here I am. Giving this another go. And committing to making it work. And I have only one resolution this year: to be happy & stay happy. I’m looking forward to an amazing year, and to the places I will get to visit later in the year. What are your new year resolutions, travel related and otherwise?

I wish you a year filled with love and laughter!

Exploring Lagos: Lekki Conservation Center

I’ve been gone for a minute, now I’m back with the jump off. Kidding.
I recently visited the ‘Lekki Conservation Centre‘ in Lagos, and I felt so ashamed that I’ve lived so close to it for such a long time and I’ve never thought to stop there. I guess I need to be more of a tourist in my own city, right? It was a good escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, and a good opportunity to ‘bond’ with nature. It’s a nature park covered in greenery, and lots of monkeys. tortoises,  and peacocks. I heard they had snakes as well, but I [thankfully] didn’t get to see any. It’s also home to the longest canopy walkway in Africa, and the second longest in the world. I believe the longest one is somewhere in Malaysia. And they had these really cool life-sized game boards, which I didn’t get to play on. But I plan to go back sometime with a bunch of friends to enjoy those. They had gazebos out in the ‘wild’ where you could just sit down and enjoy the fresh air. There were also two ponds; didn’t have much in them.
Longest canopy walkway in Africa, heeeey!

If you go, please please please don’t eat anything where there are monkeys. They will jump on you and snatch your food. It happened to too many of us that day, lol. And they were so sleek about it too! They had us hiding food in our clothes, not because we didn’t want to share but because we were scared of getting attacked, lol.
I believe it cost N1000 for an adult to get in, and that covers the guided tour. The Lekki Conservation Centre is in Lekki, just after the Chevron Roundabout, and before the second toll gate. It’s on your right, you can’t miss it. They also didn’t have any food or drink for sale [boo!], so definitely bring your own water and snacks.

Time to Pause.

I thought about quitting. Because of the curse of perfectionism. Because if it’s not perfect I don’t want to be a part of it. I kept telling myself my blog would get better. I would start taking better pictures with an actual camera, rather than rely on my iPhone. I would write more engaging and interesting posts. I would plan more travel to more exciting destinations. But then life happened. And then I decided to quit.
And then I decided not to quit.

So I will start to take it seriously. There will be some major changes to the blog very soon. And I’m also changing my travel plans for the year. I will update you on that once I figure it all out.

But I want to make my blog more meaningful; I want to connect with people all over the world. Travel for me is shifting from fancy hotels and tourist attractions [not that there won’t be any of that], to exploring cultures and beautiful minds and people from diverse backgrounds. I want to bring you beautiful stories from the most unexpected places. It’s really not about sharing pictures from my vacations. It’s more about telling stories from various destinations and cultures.
So, I ask that you bear with me while I figure this out. You will see changes soon; gradual changes.

And if you read this all the way to the end, thank you for your attention! It means a lot to me.

“Please be a traveler, not a tourist. Try new things, meet new people, and look beyond what’s right in front of you. Those are the keys to understanding this amazing world we live in.” – Andrew Zimmern

Barcelona: Other Bits & Bobs

Hola! These are some more photos from my trip to Barcelona. It’s a random assortment of random finds while we wandered around one of the most beautiful cities I’ve seen! I love the place so much that I wouldn’t mind actually living there for a few months. Anyways, enjoy the pictures!

I love the idea of outdoor gyms…saw a number of them on the beach
